    WOW!!!

Well... I got my new puppy (Remi) on saturday and she is a total whiner in the kennel...so much so that I think our neighbors are going to complain.  Any ideas?  All in all she is a very smart dog...almost has "sit" down and does pretty good about going outside.  She is a huge ball of energy!!!

    Re: WOW!!!

Congrats on the new pup!!  We crate trained our Dooley and his crate was in the bedroom and he didn't whine - he SCREAMED!  He sounded like someone was killing him.  We put him in there a few times during the day for short periods to get him used to it and if we weren't able to follow him around and just ignored it (wasn't easy) but at night, my husband wound up sleeping on the floor a few times right next to the crate, just to make him feel better.  We also put a t-shirt in the crate with him that my husband had worn so he could smell him.  It was tough but it didn't last long - less than a week, I think - just keep saying - "this too, shall pass".  It will all work out and be worth it - you'll see!!

Congrat's!!  When you say kennel are you meaning a crate, or an outdoor run?

    Re: WOW!!!

I believe you will find that Lacys, like most dogs, have a strong "den effect" about where they feel secure.  With one of ours which didn't initially take well to his indoor kennel, we simply placed a blanket over the top and sides of the wire kennel and that created the "den effect" for him.  Afterwards, he never resisted staying in his kennel.  That, along with using the same command each time (we use "kennel up") and then a reward/treat after he successfully obeys the command should hopefully put your pup on the path to pleasing you.

    Re: WOW!!!

I have to agree with Stacey to just ignore it.  My husband would tell Bayly when she got way to loud quiet and that seemed to sink in that her people were not happy with all the noise.  She learned this amazingly fast at 8 weeks!  She would only cry when she needed to potty and we would get up take her out and come straight back inside and put her back in what we call her house, we did not let her wonder around or play but just get back in her house at I think it was usually 3 or 4 in the morning.  It all is a distant memory now I had almost forgotten about her crying and me stumbling around in the middle of winter in the early morning hours thinking how much longer can I keep going, I need sleep.

    Congratulations with your new addition!!!

    Re: WOW!!!

Have you ever heard of the dog toy called a "Kong" (?spelling).  It is a rubber cone shape thing with a whole in the middle you can put peanut butter.  Cover the kennel like rvstokes stated and put the peanut butter filled "KONG".  Only give him the Kong when his is in the create.  If the pup is licking on peanut butter, they can't wine and cry.  It usually tires them out and then they just go to sleep.  All of the sudden you have a pup that loves it's create.

    Re: WOW!!!

Thank yall so much for the advice!  I feel kinda bad for my wife...she stays home and takes care of her while I'm at work.  She is biting everything and is out of control wild.  How old is old enough to start exercising her??  She is 6 weeks.  Also...it's kinda hard to take her out now because of all this rain from the cane.  Any thoughts appreciated.

    Re: WOW!!!

Your wife will be okay.  I stayed home with Bay by myself all day long too while everybody else was at work or school.  I would sit in the floor with her and play and if she got to rough I would give her a toy to bite on so she would learn not to bite me or the stuff in the house.  I would tell her no bite and put a toy or rawhide in her mouth.  We got her in November so the weather sometime was okay and other times not.  On the days we did not go out and walk and play I would put her on a leash inside the house and work with her on the proper way to walk on lead.  I would also teach her things like sit, down, stay, shake, etc.  By the time she was 2 1\2 months old you could put her in a down and walk atleast a 100 feet away and she would not get up until you said come.  We have a old rat terrier who Bay has to respect so I also taught her to share what I mean by this is if I let them have people food the old dog gets to eat out of the bowl first so I will look at Bayly and tell her to share share and when the old dog has had her part Bay will sit there until you say Bayly's turn. I found this very amazing that she had so much patience and will power.  Bayly is the only dog I have ever owned that you can tell her down and sit a plate of chicken on top of her paws and she will not touch it until you tell her okay.  People in my family find this quit amazing that she may drip a little slobber but never touch the food until she has permission.

If your wife is like me she will enjoy teaching the pup new things and when this is accomplished it will be like show-n-tell when you get home to see the amazing pup showing off all that has been learned.  The big thing will be these Lacy's pick up on things so fast it will blow your mind to see the intelligence they posses.

Folks are right that it will calm down. I happen to believe the best way to speed that up, is to put the crate somewhere that it won't bother you or the neighbors, and totally ignore him when he is whining. Any contact from you will only reinforce the behavior.. As someone else said, take him out to do his business often, but with as little interaction as possible. Just out and back in - no 'reward'. He should stop whining when he realizes that he gets nothing from doing it.

    Re: WOW!!!

One of the best things I did when I got Stryker was to take one of the small toys from the house.  I asked for the soft pound puppy.  Stryker kept that will him until he settled in.  He only whined when he was cold - and in our house that is common.  My husband would hold him in his lap until he fell asleep and then gently put him back in his crate.  We also added a $4 fleece blanket for him to tear up or do what ever.  One time I got up and Steve had fallen asleep with Stryker in his lap on the couch.  Then he laid across the couch, grabbed a blanket and covered himself and Stryker up with it.  If i thought I could have stolen a photograph of it, I would have.  It was just darling.  But I digress...

your pup is lonely and needs some companionship.  She'll settle in a few days.  Just let her play until she is wore out.  Give her lots of stuff to chew on.  Old socks tied in knots, ropes, etc.

    Re: WOW!!!

Thanks again guys.  It's getting a better at least when I'm there.  She knows I mean business but I'm not sure she takes Jes seriously.  It's been raining for three days and is supposed to clear up this afternoon...maybe now I can start her twice a day excercise program.

I will post some pics soon...we took some on the 8 hour trip back from Texas and I plan on taking more pics often...but yall are right when I've read that the only time they are still is when they are asleep.  This is a great forum...thanks again!
